Song for Today: Friday, July 31, 2020

The Lord is My Salvation by Keith and Kristyn Getty, Nathan Nockles, Jonas Myrin, 2016.

Verse 1

The grace of God has reached for me
And pulled me from the raging sea
And I am safe on this solid ground
The Lord is my salvation

Observe: God reaches out from his disposition of grace toward creation. But notice the deeper truth, he has reached for you and pulled you from a watery grave to the safety of solid ground. Look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2, ESV). The Lord is my salvation. Therefore, verse 2.

I will not fear when darkness falls
His strength will help me scale these walls
I’ll see the dawn of the rising sun
The Lord is my salvation.

Darkness is a Bible metaphor for trouble, turmoil, blindness, and finally, death. God overcame the dark in Genesis 1:3, and since he has placed you on the solid ground of his salvation, darkness holds no fear. Regardless of what may come, he promises his presence and strength as he walks you into the light of dawn. Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.” (Psalm 112:4). The Lord is my salvation. Therefore, the chorus.

Chorus
Who is like the Lord our God?
Strong to save, faithful in love
My debt is paid and the vict’ry won
The Lord is my salvation

Verse 3

My hope is hidden in the Lord
He flow’rs each promise of His Word
When winter fades I know spring will come
The Lord is my salvation

Here are wonderful metaphors. He flowers each promise is the picture of beauty springing forth in the crocus pushing through the fading snow of winter, as the daffodils announce that spring has come. Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. Yes, the Lord will give what is good. (Psalm 85:11–12a) The Lord is my salvation.

Verse 4

In times of waiting, times of need
When I know loss, when I am weak
I know His grace will renew these days
The Lord is my salvation

In our new normal, we wonder, “how long, O Lord.” Facing loss and need are real concerns, but as his grace moved him to pull you from the raging sea, it will move him to renew your days. The Lord is my salvation, who is like the Lord our God?

Verse 5

And when I reach my final day
He will not leave me in the grave
But I will rise, He will call me home
The Lord is my salvation

The reality is that we will all reach that final day. Death is personified in raging seas and inky darkness, but you have been pulled from both by grace. David writes my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:9–11).

Rejoice in the promises flowered, the coming spring, the darkness banished, walls overcome, and the quickening dawn because the grace of God has reached for you. You are the bride for the Son, preserved by the Spirit, and heir to all the riches of the Father. Hence the tag and then the chorus.

Glory be to God the Father
Glory be to God the Son
Glory be to God the Spirit
The Lord is our salvation.

Who is like the Lord our God?
Strong to save, faithful in love
My debt is paid and the vict’ry won
The Lord is my salvation.
