My Faith has Found a Resting Place by Eliza Hewett, 1873, updated by Greg Thompson, 2002.
1. My faith has found a resting place
From guilt my soul is free
I trust the Ever-living One
His wounds shall plead for me.
Chorus:
I need no other argument
I need no other plea
It is enough that Jesus died
And that He died for me.
Observe: Have you ever felt restless in your faith? You say to yourself, “God is in control,” but there remains a vague feeling of uncertainty, of restlessness. The cure for restless faith is knowing you are freed from sin by the Ever-living One, Jesus Christ, whose wounds are your proof of cleansing.
The Apostle John writes, That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands… (1 John 1:1). John saw, he heard, and he touched the Ever-living One with his hands. He needed no other argument, no other plea. He knew, and it was enough, that Jesus died for him and had been raised to everlasting life by the Father. Trust John’s witness if you desire rest for your weary soul.
2. My great physician heals the sick
The lost He came to save
For me His precious blood He shed
For me His life He gave
During his earthly ministry, Jesus healed the sick, lame, deaf, blind, and raised the dead. His physical healings point us to the healing we need. We are sick with guilt, lame, unable to walk in righteousness, deaf, and blind to the things of God and dead in sin. The great Physician heals us spiritually now and physically for eternity. He provides full redemption, paying the price to free us from sin, sickness, and death forever. What more do you need than to know that he gave his life for you? It is enough that Jesus died for me.
3. My heart is leaning on the Word
The written Word of God
Salvation by my Savior’s name
Salvation through His blood
Restless faith is cured by leaning on the Word of God. When the requirements to follow Jesus became difficult, and many followers left. When Jesus asked his disciples if they too were going to leave, Peter replied, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68). God’s special revelation of his Word tells you all you need to know, there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12).
I need no other argument
I need no other plea
It is enough that Jesus died
And that He died for me.
Trust in his promises. It is enough that Jesus died, and that he died for you. Let the truth of this song encourage you throughout the coming weekend.
I hope you will tune into our YouTube channel to hear this Sunday’s sermon on Abraham from Genesis 15. Verse 6 is one of the clearest reasons for why we need no other argument or plea. (Abram) believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness. I hope the message will encourage you.
I will be on vacation next week. Next Sunday, August 16, starting at 10:00, we begin gathering together again for worship. We’ll be outdoors for the safety of all. So the Song for Today will end for now. We’re thankful to be able to meet again in person to sing together these “Songs for Today” that tell of our great hope, and to hear from God’s Word that assures us that, indeed, our faith has found a resting place. I hope you’ll join us.
Blessings, Pastor Don.
